Louise Keller’s “CLOUDY WITH a CHANCE… 2” Is Hollow Excitement

In response to Louise Keller’s 371‑word review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on Urban Cinefile

Louise Keller’s late entry “CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2” is unbelievably useless. The excitement that Keller manages to inject into her writing does little to cover up the emptiness that characterizes her entire work.

The most notable feature of Keller’s work is that she spends an inordinate amount of time describing things that appear in the movie. She ends her first paragraph listing off various creations and then, not quite satisfied, returns to the subject, filling her third paragraph with a second list.

Perhaps Keller is seeking to make a statement on the way the film itself unravels to the viewer (an endless barrage of things with no connective tissue), but her second paragraph complains of an “overly complex plot” which would work against any subversive readings of the work.

At the end of the day MEATBALLS 2 might just be exactly what it looks like, a lazy piece of film criticism. Where Keller does try and touch on some of the aspects of the film other than describing its visuals, such as the characters’ relationships, her tendency to list takes over once again. Sentences are expanded to such lengths that upon arriving at their conclusion, you’ll barely be able to remember what you were even talking about.
