Eric Eisenberg professes to love his work, and he definitely seems to be having fun in his latest, “Kick-Ass 2.” His passion for film and criticism are on full display as he sinks his teeth into the material and creates an engaging and unique piece, sure to please casual readers and longtime fans alike.

With a keen eye, Eisenberg dissects the structure of the film. It’s where he spends most of his time, and he gets a lot of mileage out of it. It’s an extremely rare feat to be able to paint such a clear picture of a film without spoiling any of the details. It’s a testament to his skill as a reviewer that he pulls it off seemingly without breaking a sweat.

Eisenberg blazes a new and interesting trail with his Kick-Ass 2. Instead of arguing that Hit-Girl’s screen time is woefully inadequate, and that the entire movie should have been centered on her arc, he takes the polar opposite position, concluding that the film could have, and should have, done away with her arc completely. It certainly goes against popular opinion and it will be interesting to see if the passing of time brings more critics in line with Eisenberg’s position.

Eisenberg’s writing throughout is strong, controlled, and articulate. He builds credibility early on, able to frame the film in its multi-layered context. He ably handles its place as a sequel, an installment in a franchise, and a comic-book adaptation. His discussion of the source material is particularly enlightening.

Like many of his contemporaries, Eisenberg concludes his review on the subject of Kick-Ass 3. For once though, it feels natural and appropriate. His thoughts on a future sequel complement the introductory background information and creates an attractive bookend to an extremely successful review.
