Putman’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2” Review Is an Ugly Duckling

In response to Dustin Putman’s 859‑word review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on

Film Critic Dustin Putman’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013),” a review of the film by the same name, is a capably written gift wrapped in some tragically ugly packaging. While it is a concise, convincing criticism, its visual unattractiveness and the challenge its layout prevents to the eyes may turn off many readers.

The text of the review is tiny, laid out in a white font against a dark gray background. The combination of those two things can make it difficult to read for the near-sighted or those reading the review on smaller screens. In addition, the graphics around the text are unappealing, particularly the header image at the top which is comprised almost entirely of lens flare.

The review itself, though, is an effective takedown of its target. It hammers home the films flaws without seeming petty or mean, and it provides enough information for the reader to make up their own minds separate from Putman’s opinion. Those are hallmarks of good film criticism, and Putman deserves kudos for them. It’s a shame, though, that they’re hidden behind a wall of ugly. While Cloudy With a chance may be well-written, it is by no means the belle of the ball.
