The Working Title for Dan Gire’s “Revenge Tale” Was Probably “Lazy Heart”

In response to Dann Gire’s 585‑word review of Out of the Furnace on Daily Herald (IL)

Dann Gire makes a cute joke in his latest piece about how director Scott Cooper’s film could be titled “Lazy Heart.” See, because his last film was “Crazy Heart.” Well, the critic might want to take a second look at his summary-review, “Terrific cast, camerawork fail to heat up revenge tale,” and reconsider who is lazy.

Revenge Tale fits into the category of a review that offers critique in the introduction and plot summary for the rest of the film. Gire doesn’t seem to understand the concept of film criticism and the idea that “reviewing” a film should not be taken literally.

It’s completely inconceivable how so many reviews make it online without actually saying anything of importance about the lead character and actor. Gire manages to note that Christian Bale has a “scraggly beard,” and proceeds to completely flush critique down the toilet. It’s beyond offensive and review connoisseurs may decide to stay home for movie day rather than leaving their homes for a theater.

Gire acknowledges cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi and art director Therese DePrez,, which appears to be his “critique.” Sure, there are moments of hope, but the sad truth is that the review is plain bad.

Revenge Tale is quick composition that shows little dedication to original thought.
