Kam Williams’s “Cloudy With a Chance” Is a Pull Quote in Sheep’s Clothing

In response to Kam Williams’s 346‑word review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on Sly Fox

When a film review features a stock Blogger layout and a grainy, low-resolution picture of the author in the masthead, LOOK OUT. There is going to be some amateurishness afoot. Even the most amateurish-looking film review can be a diamond in the rough, though, containing real insight and wisdom. That is not the case with Kam Williams’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (FILM REVIEW),” which has about as much right calling itself a film review as a dollar menu burger from McDonald’s has calling itself a filet mignon.

Cloudy with a Chance is six paragraphs of plot summary followed by a final sentence that is nothing more than a transparent ploy to appear as a pull quote on the movie poster. There is not even the faintest pretense of offering legitimate criticism of the film. Readers will find no mention of the quality of the plot, acting, animation, or any other element crucial to the film.

One would expect more from a film critic with as many degrees and accolades as Williams has received (they all adorn the review itself for the benefit of the reader), but Cloudy with a Chance bears all the marks of a mercenary work-for-hire. It is a film review in name only, and should be relegated to the dustbin of film criticism.
