Seb Patrick’s “Kick-Ass 2” Appears Small but Has Huge Payoff

In response to Seb Patrick’s 156‑word review of Kick-Ass 2 on Film4

By ,

At first glance, it may appear as though Film4 has commissioned Seb Patrick to quickly punch out short blurbs about film, as the entirety of “Kick-Ass 2” is layed out on a single screen, three paragraphs. Even so, the presentation is above average, with a vibrant color scheme, a big playful picture, and very clear organization. One will be prepared to read a short but well-executed review. And the beauty of the review is that those who prefer this experience, can have it, though the review has hidden depths to explore for the more adventurous.

The review is very simply, but effectively, organized into three clearly labeled sections. Synopsis, About/Cast + Connections, In a Nutshell. This breakdown helps readers easily navigate the review to find the information that is most relevant and useful to them. Its nothing short of a stroke of genius. The synopsis is spoiler free, the nutshell is an effective bottom line, and the “about” section is where things get really good.

Patrick is a gifted reviewer who is able to write simultaneously for both the casual reader and the hard core fan. In a fresh and original twist, Patrick lets his readers decide in which camp they are by placing an option for “more” at the end of the Cast and Connections section. When one does opt in, the short 156 word review is transformed into a robust 609 word review that masterfully examines the film’s performances, direction, and impact.

Not only is the idea original, it is expertly executed. By placing the writing in the unique “Cast and Connections” context, comparisons to both the film’s predecessors and source material read as essential rather than tangential. Patrick’s writing is top notch, and points he makes resonate with credibility and logic.

This may be the finest Kick-Ass 2 review on the market.
