Conterio’s Irreverant “Meatballs 2 Review” Is Relentlessly Entertaining

In response to Martyn Conterio’s 344‑word review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on Little White Lies

Martyn Conterio’s supremely cheeky “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 Review” is a delight from beginning to end. Conterio’s work manages to be short while feeling completely fleshed out, funny while providing insight, and appropriately sarcastic without ever being dismissive. It’s an extremely rare combination, a triumvirate of successful film criticism.

Conterio doesn’t waste much time with matters pertaining to other movies. The first Cloudy is dutifully mentioned and is used only as a springboard into a discussion into its sequel. The references to the film’s obvious inspirations are equally mentioned (with the addition of King Kong adding a fresh twist) but only within an appositive, freeing the narrative up and keeping things moving at a fast clip.

And boy do things move. Conterio is a confident writer, fearless at times, and his descriptions are lucid, vivid, and often hilarious. The highlights of her review are all delivered within parentheses, making this second voice the irreverent and jaded alter ego that prevents the balance of the piece from ever being upset.

Conterio finishes strongly, showcasing the deeper insights that he was able to glean, and pass on to his readers, as a result of refusing to dismiss the film offhand as a kid’s flick. The picture he paints of what is going on beneath the surface are compelling and timely, leading the work to a satisfying and revelatory conclusion. For a work that is both short and powerful, look no further.
