The criticism is fast and furious in Simon Reynolds’s “‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ review.” Presented in an easily digestible 449 words, Cloudy with a Chance is a lean cut of free-range, organic insight paired with a glass of smooth, oaky analysis.

If there was any fat on Cloudy with a Chance before it was served up to readers, that fat was trimmed and thrown away. What remains is a minimum of plot rehashing and a generous portion of charm.

In reviewing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Reynolds throws in hints of its predecessor for comparison. The comparison isn’t always favorable, but it gives readers a good starting point if they are familiar with the first film.

He does not dwell too long on that comparison, though, and is quick to move on to rating the sequel on its own merits. He discusses not only the quality of the animation and the humor of the film, but also the thematic elements baked into it. It’s the discussion of those thematic elements that is missing in other, more half-baked reviews, so it is a welcome addition here.

While it is unlikely to leave the most ravenous readers satisfied, Cloudy with a Chance offers plenty of sustenance for the rest. Reynolds manages to add just the right amount of each ingredient, and the result is a tasty dish indeed.
